Sea-Monkeys® PAL (Planned Mobile Game, 2001)

With Motorola seeing potential in the then young mobile market, it entered a two-year agreement with Creature Labs in hopes of tapping a more casual audience.

Planned for the third quarter of 2001, Sea-Monkeys® PAL (Pet Artificial Life) was supposed to be the first of various games produced and marketed in the mobile app market. The gameplay would consist of raising & keeping alive a virtual pet Sea-Monkey, akin to a Tamagotchi.

After that press release from February 2001, no further information surfaced about Sea-Monkeys® PAL fate, and its development (if one even happened in the first place). Later that year, Creature Labs released The Amazing Virtual Sea-Monkeys for the PC market, which was announced back in April of 2000.

Around that time, Creature Labs was struggling financially, and after an unsuccessful refinancing in 2002, it shut down in March of 2003. So we can assume that the partnership with Motorola fell through before anything ever materialized for this project.

At that period, mobile internet & gaming were in their infancy, so it would’ve been interesting to see what the end product would have been like.

If new information ever surfaces about this planned project, we’ll update this page accordingly.
